Savitri JindalSavitri Jindal, the India richest woman, was born on March 20th, 1950 in the small town of Tinsukia in Upper Assam. She is the daughter of a renowned Rajput Brahmin family and is married to Om Prakash Jindal, the founder of the Jindal group.

Savitri Devi Jindal is an Indian businesswoman and politician. She was the chairperson emeritus of O.P.Jindal Group. She is also the president of Maharaja Agrasen Medical College, Agroha. After the demise of her husband in 2005, she became the chairperson of the Jindal group.

Savitri  Jindal Biography

Savitri  Jindal was born in Tinsukia, Assam. She married Om Prakash Jindal in the 1970s, who had founded the Jindal Group, a steel and power conglomerate. Savitri Jindal was a Minister in the Haryana Government. A member of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) from the Hisar constituency till 2010. She was the Chairperson of the Haryana State Women’s Commission. Served as president of the National Federation of Indian Women. Savitri Jindal was a member of Rajya Sabha (1996–98) and was nominated again in 2012.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, she was the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Hisar (Lok Sabha constituency).

Jindal is a Member of the Advisory Council at the Institute of Financial Management and Research (IFMR), Chennai. She is also a Member of the Governing Council at IFMR’s Institutes in Ludhiana, Jaipur, Guwahati, and Kolkata. Has been appointed as President of Maharaja Agrasen Medical College, Agroha.

She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2006.  Has also been awarded the ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Samman’ Award for her outstanding achievements and contributions toward safeguarding India’s interests in the world. In establishing strong human linkages between its citizens living abroad and their native land.

Avtar Group headed by Jindal’s husband, OP Jindal, is a leading steel producer with an annual capacity of 8.5 million tons. OP Jindal Steel and Power Limited, a subsidiary of the Group, is a leading producer of electricity in Northern India. In 1994, following the liberalization of India’s economy, the Group ventured into mining and entered into an agreement with Rajasthan State Mines and Mineral to operate its iron ore mines. The Group also has interests in shipping and has two bulk cargo vessels named MV Jindal Vijay and MV Jindal Hari Om.

The Group has interests in power generation, coal mining, infrastructure, and manufacturing. It has been ranked second in the list of top 50 Indian companies by EY’s Global 500 survey of India’s Best Corporates.

In January 2013, the Group was reported to be in talks with a South Korean steel company to purchase a controlling stake in its iron ore mines for about $1.8 billion (£1 billion). In November 2014, Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) announced a share swap deal with JSW Steel of India. Under the agreement, JSW is likely to buy shares in JSPL in exchange for receiving an equal amount of stake in Jindal’s steel business.

In August 2017, Savitri Devi Jindal’s son, Naveen Jindal was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for his role in a coal scam. He is accused of taking bribes from the Amtek Auto company in return for the allocation of coal blocks.

Om Prakash Jindal’s wife, Savitri Devi Jindal, a well-known animal welfare activist, is commercially active in an array of business and philanthropic activities. She is Chairman of JSW Cement and President of Jindal Global University, Sonepat. She was formerly a member of the National Advisory Council, Cabinet Committee on Investment, and the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade & Industry.

In 2014 she was nominated by Narendra Modi to be a member of the Rajya Sabha. In May 2014 she was invited by the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare to be on the Governing Council of the National Institute of Ayurveda in New Delhi.

Savitri Jindal, the wife of OP Jindal and fifth-generation member of the family which ran India’s largest steel producer for decades. Has been declared India richest woman, with a fortune estimated at US$6.3 billion (£4.7bn).

She is a member of the International Business Council for Sustainable Development. For her contribution to the environment she been awarded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).  She is also a member of the Executive Committee on Climate Change at the World Economic Forum and The Energy & Resources Institute (TERI) Advisory Council on Corporate Responsibility in India.

Jindal Steel and Power Ltd, India’s largest private steelmaker has a total capacity of 1.1 million tonnes per annum. The company, which is promoted by the Jindal family, is among India’s top 10 steel producers and one of the top 10 producers of pig iron in Asia. It is also among India’s top 50 largest refiners, and ranks among the Top 2 in the Aluminum & Refractories sector, according to 2012 rankings by The Indian Express newspaper.

Giving away more than Rs1,000 crore since 2005 the JSPL family has pumped much of its vast wealth into philanthropy. It has donated precious artifacts to museums in India, including a bronze statue of Queen Victoria. A collection of paintings by Raja Ravi Varma.

Jindal Steel’s chairman is Sanjay Jindal, Savitri Jindal’s cousin. The records show he is worth US$1.9 billion (£1.3bn). His brother Naveen Jindal (director of JSPL) was declared India richest man in May 2007. With a net worth of US$2.
