Greg Nicotero, the show’s producer and a specialist in zombie effects, is the person who knows best when it comes to what The Walking Dead requires.
No one is more responsible for the series’ recognisable undead aesthetic than the makeup effects. Enthusiast-turned-director, possibly with the possible exception of the series author Robert Kirkman. Nicotero dates his involvement with The Walking Dead all the way back to when original showrunner Frank Darabont hire him before the pilot had even been sold. He’ll see it through to the conclusion and then develop a number of spinoffs after directing the series finale.
Let’s just say Nicotero’s perspective on The Walking Dead is significant. And Nicotero expressed his belief that there was really only one way for AMC’s flagship zombie series to come to an end during a recent interview with Aaron Sagers on Den of Geek’s spooky pop culture Talking Strange podcast.
Without Rick Grimes, The Walking Dead cannot be finished. According to Nicotero, the Walking Dead has always been Rick’s story.
Rick Grimes appears prominently in the series finale of The Walking Dead, despite the fact that he hasn’t been on the programme since the middle of season 9. The concluding seconds of “Rest in Peace” double as a kind of preview for the future Rick and Michonne series, which has yet to be given a name. Before setting out into the zombie wilderness to reunite their family, viewers see Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) each write a letter to their daughter Judith separately.
Since Rick left the series in 2018, fans have been anticipating this particular moment. They will soon see the rightful resolution to Rick Grimes’ story, but not in the way that was initially intend. Rick’s journey will be continuing in a series of feature films helm by Walking Dead universe czar Scott Gimple, AMC said after Rick’s penultimate episode of The Walking Dead. And everyone involved was adamant that this would be a legitimate cinematic experience rather than just a fancy TV movie.
Alas, plans inevitably change as time goes on, especially when a sudden global pandemic becomes a reality. There was little information available about a Rick Grimes movie, and no date for filming could be determined. Finally, AMC said that a brand-new, six-episode TV series would wrap out Rick’s tale and his relationship with Michonne. The transition from film to television, in Nicotero’s opinion, was all a part of the conventional creative process.
The movie script went through several revisions before being abandon, according to Nicotero. The notion of producing a Rick Grimes programme probably first surfaced about a year and a half ago. Nobody, in my opinion, genuinely believed it would occur. We start understanding, “Look, if we’re not going to do the movies, then maybe there’s a show there,” as we get closer.
Nicotero continues, “In Georgia this August, we recorded the finale footage with Lincoln and Gurira.”
Why Rick Grimes couldn’t be properly replaced in The Walking Dead
A few characters were set up in The Walking Dead to succeed Rick Grimes as the leader of Alexandria, but they all left the show as well. As in Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comics, Carl Grimes was always the obvious choice to take Rick’s place. However, Carl was shockingly murdered off in The Walking Dead season 8. The Walking Dead’s Maggie Rhee and Michonne were similarly in a good position to take over. As the community’s new leaders, but in season 9 of the show. Maggie abruptly left, and in season 10, Michonne left shortly after. It was challenging to develop a trustworthy replacement leader. Because that trio left The Walking Dead about the same time as Rick.
The closest The Walking Dead has gotten to replacing Rick Grimes is with Daryl Dixon. Daryl has been one of the most well-liked characters throughout his time on The Walking Dead, but this is partly due to his anti-hero demeanour, which doesn’t lend itself to him succeeding Rick. Judith Grimes, Rick’s daughter, has become a more well-established character in the final season. However, replacing Rick Grimes was never going to be easy given that he was the focus of the programme for almost ten years. Other survivors have been thrust into the spotlight in his absence.
The future of The Walking Dead is still determined by Rick Grimes.
Although the primary season of The Walking Dead has concluded. The property is still alive thanks to three spinoffs, including Rick and Michonne’s own programme. With Michonne battle her way past walkers to find Rick. Who is urgently seeking to flee the CRM. The Walking Dead finale provided a preview of horrors to come. While Maggie and Negan’s show will breathe new life into The Walking Dead and Daryl’s series in France is interesting. Rick’s return makes his spinoff the most eagerly awaited of the three. The Walking Dead should hope to regain lost viewers now that Rick Grimes will undoubtedly play a significant role in the show’s future.
