The Math Olympiad is a series of competitions focused on problem-solving open to all the students from grades 3-8. Anyone can sign up, and the more you do, the better! Each competition has an online section as well as an on-paper section. They also include two different types of problems:  multiple choice and short answer (no free response). Olympiad is India’s biggest success, and it is considered one of the most important competitive exams at the school level. It even provides a scholarship for students to motivate them to take part in many exams and lay a standard foundation for their education. Taking part in such an exam needs a lot of courage and confidence. Hence, I would like to congratulate all the students who came forward to take the test. The Math Olympiad is an effective way to test the student’s IQ. Preparation plays an important role when it comes to participating in competitive exams. Many students from various places with various mindsets and capabilities attempt the exam. So,  standing out in such great competition is not an easy task. Now, let’s talk about the steps involved in preparing for the exam. There are different ways and methods of preparation, but in my opinion, a dish needs to be proper for it to taste better. Before diving into the syllabus, one should know about the exam pattern and start preparing according to that, and then comes the syllabus. Check if your teacher has covered the entire syllabus. If not, ask them to teach you the syllabus to not worry about the incomplete syllabus.

See that you have notes regarding the syllabus and if you feel that the note is not sufficient, ask your teacher to guide you in preparing the notes. Prepare it so that it should be understandable and accurate to revise the topics perfectly before the exam. Once you are preparing your exam material, go through the notes and take a test. Taking practice tests and analyzing oneself self are important factors. Though you have confidence in your preparation, these tests always help you get to the highest point in preparation. Overconfidence is a drawback for anyone. The advantage of taking these practice tests is knowing your own strong and weak areas in a subject. It is not limited to only mathematics; for your final exams also.  Remember! Practice makes a man perfect. After taking the test, analyze your weak areas and try to focus on them. Weak areas don’t include only the subject; it also includes time management. No matter how hard you prepare for an exam, it is a complete waste if you cannot complete the exam in the given time. Try to attempt a minimum of five practice tests before you go for your final examination. Various websites on the internet have provided many practice tests. You will feel like writing a real exam, so try to attempt them and get yourself used to online mode.  Next, I would like to suggest going through the previous year’s question papers. As I mentioned earlier,  practice is essential for any competitive exam. Many websites provide previous year’s question papers and solutions. Try to read them and check if you can solve them without any help in your free time. If you cannot solve any question on your own or if you cannot understand the solution given, contact your teacher and ask them for help.

Teachers would love to help their students prepare themselves for exams, so don’t hesitate to seek help from them. Study the level 1 and level 2  papers and try to solve them based on the exam level that you are going to attempt. You need not push yourself too hard to attempt these. Try to maintain your stress level as minimum as possible. When you believe that you have a hold on most of the subject, try solving the Previous Year Paper for IMO Class 5 Maths 2014 with time constraints. After taking the test, you will be able to predict your performance in the examination. Everyone will make mistakes, so don’t get tense when you make some mistakes.  And at the same time, don’t ignore them; try to reduce the number of mistakes. Do not leave tough topics for the final day or completely ignore them. Try at least to know the important definitions,  formulas, and topics. Once you with the previous year’s question papers, sample papers, and practice tests, you will find yourself in a position where you would be ready to take the examination at any time.  Maintain confidence till the completion of the examination. Don’t get yourself distracted with friends and other things before the exam. Try to keep your mind calm and clear. Do not overwork yourself. Health is essential no matter what you are going through. Eat properly and try to maintain a healthy sleep cycle. On the previous day, revise all the topics material you have prepared for the exam.

Do not start any new topics or tough topics. Last-minute preparation will only lead to stress. Prepare the things required for the exam beforehand. Always keep an extra pen or pencil with you.  Finally, you will be standing among many students trying to top the national exam on the big day. Dress properly and don’t get influenced by others. Check your examination seating properly and start the exam with confidence and let your hard work pay off.
