Itishree Murmu is 35, the daughter of Droupadi Murmu, who is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician and will be India’s president for 2022. Speaking to the Times of India, Itishree recounts the story of her mother’s life from a single mother journey to her presidential candidacy announcement:
Itishree was only two when her father abandoned them. Her mother had no support and was determined to provide for both herself and Itishree. The two lived in a kuccha house with a 10×10 lapa (wooden box) and a pit latrine. Itishree recalls: “At the time, it was not easy for women to be a single mother. So she decided to quit her job and start from the bottom.”

Itishree Murmu, is a bank employee in Bhubaneswar. She is 35 years old.
During her early years, her mother was also her schoolteacher, which put extra pressure on her. As a student after having been a daughter first. She noted that her mother was a strict disciplinarian and that she always maintained a healthy work-life balance.
Itishree Murmu received her education in Pune, and according to her, her mother never treated her differently from her brother. However, her two brothers, Laxman, who passed away in 2009 under mysterious circumstances, and the other brother, who passed away in an accident in 2013.
To enrol in classes at the Suryadatta Institute of Management and Mass Communication, she travelled to Pune.
At the UCO Bank in Bhubaneswar, Itishree Murmu is currently the manager. Since her father’s long-term sickness and death in 2014, she and her mother have shared a home. On March 6, 2015, she reportedly got married. Her husband’s name is Ganesh Chandra Hembram. She has two children.
Even if Itishree Murmu’s mother were to be elected president of India, Itishree said she would prefer to stay with her mother and her two daughters.
