NVSP: National Voters Service Portal

NVSP is a service where you can register to vote using your National Identity Card or driving license. According to the information on the site, “Registered voters will be able to access their voter ID card and other services of the Electoral Office.” 

The site is extremely easy to use and provides guidance for those who may not be tech savvy, as well as additional information about voting laws in Sri Lanka. It also has a small FAQ section describing how people can update their voter ID card if they’ve changed their address or changed nationality.

What is NVSP?

NVSP is a service where you can register to vote using your National Identity Card or driving license.

According to the information on the site, “Registered voters will be able to access their voter ID card and other services of the Electoral Office.”

The site also provides information about how parties that have been de-registered in the past can apply for registration again.

The service was established in accordance with the provisions of Chapter VII, Section 42 (1) of the Constitution of Sri Lanka, and Regulations issued by the Election Commission.

In addition to this service being made available online, NVSP has an SMS/call center available 24/7.

Why is a Voter card important?

National identity card ( Voter ID Card ) is an important thing for every citizen.  It is like a passport, because when you travel to a country, you are asked to show your ID card.

When you go to an organisation, they ask you to show your ID card.  If you don’t have it, they will say “you do not have an account here”. 

Lots of things are required by law and organisation or institution, such as logging into the bank or applying for telephone or car connection.  You might have a problem doing it if you don’t have this card.

Voter ID Cards are also very important in case of an election.

Voter ID number which is 10 digits in ADR format. The card must be valid at the time of voting, which means it must not contain a date prior to the date of election.  Forms issued after 31st December 2018 will remain valid during the two-year period leading up to elections that fall within that period.

List of electoral divisions in which the voter resides (Registration lists are updated bi-annually).

Voter ID card is an important document for any citizen because citizen has right to vote in general elections.  Voter card also helps you apply for a bank account, phone connection etc.

What is an EPIC number?

EPIC stands for Elector’s Photo Identity Card which is a number encoded on the National ID Card.  By entering your EPIC number, you can register to vote in elections.

How can I find my EPIC number?

On the top right corner of the National ID card there is a number.  This is that number.  However, make sure you enter it in 10 digits or else it will not work. You should not have any spaces before or after your EPIC number.

Also make sure you have entered your correct date of birth (DD/MM/YYYY) otherwise it will not work as well.

What is EVM used for?

EVM is an Electronic Voting Machine. It is used to record the votes cast in an election. It has a memory card that holds all the votes cast, and it saves them until the results are announced. You will find this machine at every polling station.

How are people registered?

The voter registration process starts when a person applies for a National ID Card and they have to show proof of their identity.  The application is sent to the National Registration Department (NID) which registers that individual with the Electoral Office.
