Priscilla Presley: an American actress and businesswoman

by Sonal Shukla

Priscilla Ann Presley is an American actress and businesswoman. She was born Wagner but adopted the name Beaulieu. She was the former partner and chairwoman of Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE), the business that made Graceland one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. She was also the former spouse of the American singer Elvis Presley. Presley co-starred in the three Naked Gun movies with Leslie Nielsen and portrayed Jenna Wade on the enduring television series Dallas during her acting career.

Priscilla Presley Early years

On May 24, 1945, Priscilla Ann Wagner was born at Brooklyn Naval Hospital in Brooklyn. Albert Henry Iversen (1899–1971), her maternal grandfather, was born in Egersund, Norway. He emigrated to America, where he married Lorraine Davis (1903–1984), an English and Scots-Irish woman. Anna Lillian Iversen, who lived from 1926 to 2021, was their only child. Later, she adopted the name Ann or had her name changed to Ann. When she was 19 years old, she gave birth to Priscilla.

James Frederick Wagner (1921–1945), a US Navy pilot, was Priscilla’s biological father. He was the son of Cherrytree Township, Pennsylvania residents Kathryn Wagner (1901–1995) and Harold Wagner (1897–1958). On August 10, 1944, at the age of 23, after dating Ann for more than three years, he wed her. When Priscilla was six months old, Wagner perished in a plane accident while flying back home on vacation.

Ann wed Paul Beaulieu, a Canadian-born officer in the United States Air Force, in 1948. Along with half-siblings Donald (born 1949), Michelle (born 1954), Jeffrey (born 1959), and twins Thomas (1962–2013) and Timothy Beaulieu (born 1962), the couple raised Priscilla. On April 17, 1950, Priscilla adopted the Beaulieu surname. The Beaulieus moved to Del Valle, Texas, in 1956, but her stepfather soon had to relocate to Wiesbaden, West Germany.

West Germany’s way of life

The Beaulieus initially stayed at the Helene Hotel when they first arrived in West Germany, but after three months they found it to be too expensive and started looking for a rental.

Germany

Elvis Presley first met Priscilla on September 13, 1959, while serving in the Army, at a gathering at his rental home in Bad Nauheim, Germany.  She was only fourteen, but she had a big impact on him. In front of her, Elvis allegedly went back to his “awkward, embarrassed” boy-next-door persona.

MARRIAGE-

Before Christmas in 1966, Elvis asked Priscilla to marry him. Elvis’s manager, Colonel Parker, persuaded him to get married by reminding him of the “morals clause” in his record deal with RCA. In a 1973 interview with Ladies’ Home Journal, Priscilla stated that she and Elvis were content to simply coexist, but that “at that time it wasn’t nice for people to [just] live together.”

At the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas, the couple got hitched on May 1, 1967.

Priscilla Presley Divorce and separation

On October 9, 1973, the divorce became legally binding.

Priscilla was given an outright cash payment of $725,000, spousal support, child support, 5% of Elvis’ new publishing companies, and half of the proceeds from the sale of their Beverly Hills home. The couple also agreed to share custody of their daughter. Elvis and Priscilla remained close, walking out of the courthouse together on the day of their divorce.

Business

Following her divorce from Elvis, Presley opened Bis & Beau, a clothing store in Los Angeles, with her stylist friend Olivia Bis in 1973.

Elvis passed away in 1977, and one of the executors of his estate, Lisa Marie’s inheritance, was his father Vernon. Priscilla was chosen by Vernon to succeed him after his death. She took over after Vernon’s passing in 1979. Upkeep on Graceland alone cost $500,000 per year, and costs had reduced Lisa Marie’s inheritance to just $1 million.

Moments, the perfume Presley introduced in 1988, was followed in the 1990s by a number of other top-selling scents, including Experiences in 1993, Indian Summer in 1996, and Roses and More in 1998. Additionally, she has had success live-selling her line of goods on the Home Shopping Network. Bob Circosta, a seasoned HSN host, served as her coach.

The Priscilla Presley Collection, Presley’s extensive line of bedding, debuted in Sydney, Australia, in 2006. For the line, she collaborated with Australian fashion designer Bruno Schiavi.

Finding Graceland and Breakfast with Einstein are two films to which she has contributed to the making. In September 2000, Presley was selected to join the board of directors of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Priscilla Presley Acting career

Originally, Presley had been offered a part on Charlie’s Angels as one of the angels. She declined the part because she didn’t like the program. In 1980, Priscilla made her debut on television as a co-host of Those Amazing Animals. She had her first professional acting role on a television show in The Fall Guy’s “Manhunter” episode from season 2 premiered in 1983. She later got a part with Michael Landon in the television movie Love is Forever. She was treated well by the majority of the cast and crew, and many of her co-stars complimented her on her acting, but she found Landon to be challenging to work with on set. Presley landed the part of Jenna Wade in the soap opera Dallas after the television movie aired. Although she played Jenna for the longest, she was actually the third actress to portray the character. Presley left the show in 1988 after five years.

At the New Wimbledon Theatre in Wimbledon, London, Presley made her pantomime debut in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs over the course of the 2012 holiday season, sharing the stage with Warwick Davis. 2014 saw her perform as the Wicked Queen once more at the Manchester Opera House.

Honours

In 1998, Rhodes College awarded Presley with a Doctor of Humanities degree. She was chosen as the godmother of the American Queen, the largest steamboat ever constructed, which was christened on April 27, 2012, in Memphis, its home port. She was chosen to receive the 2018 Distinguished Citizen Award from the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. On July 22, 2022, Theatre Memphis held a gala called “Honoring Priscilla Presley: The Artist, The Woman” to recognize her contributions to Memphis art and tourism. The event featured more than a dozen speakers and a live musical tribute.
