The iPhone 15’s Physical Buttons Could Be Fake ‘Taptic’ Buttons

by Sonal Shukla

The iPhone 15’s physical buttons could be fake “taptic” buttons meant to mimic the feel of a smartphone when it is touched. These might be used in place of the home button on an iPhone that has no home button, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. “Instead of using a physically Home Button, Apple will use various technologies such as Taptic Engine and acoustic wave for Home Button,” he said in his latest research note. Apple’s upcoming update would also include Face ID, which means there won’t be any need for a physical home button at all. It is “not impossible” that this technology will also become available in 2020 models with display sizes between 6 inches and 6.5 inches.

Extrapolating from all the information available, it seems clear that Apple’s 2020 IPhones will not have physical buttons. We don’t know yet, however, if they will be the “touch” buttons or the “taptic” buttons described in this report. We also don’t know whether Apple intends to change the name of their home button mechanism to something like “home pad”. Hopefully that information will emerge in the next few weeks.

Commentary: I’m personally hoping my iPhone 15 won’t appear before 2021 due to an aging body being unable to handle all these features and a shortage in supply of nanomaterials and battery cells. My iPhone 15 will have a 16 megapixel front camera, 64 gigabytes of storage, and a Sharp IGZO display made of graphene nanomaterial. The body will be made of carbon nanotubes, and it’s screen bezel-less with no physical buttons on the front or sides. It will also have an additional battery pack in the back that my iPhone 15 can wirelessly charge using cold fusion energy. There will also be a new space black color option (but the original three colors will remain).
