7 Tips for Vacationing in the United States

by Sonal Shukla

It is difficult to give vacation tips for traveling in the United States. The U.S. is such a huge country with many different regions, backgrounds, and cultures. What applies in one area doesn’t always apply everywhere. Nevertheless, here are some general tips for traveling in the United States that should apply just about everywhere.

  1. Consider Taking a Cruise

If the prospect of planning your own trip is overwhelming, consider something like a Hawaii cruise. While there may be some small details that you have to take care of on your own, your itinerary is all planned out for you. You just have to show up to board the ship on time, and the crew takes care of the rest. Cruise companies know their destinations very well and plan some unforgettable experiences for their passengers.

  1. Find Out Whether You Need a Visa

Not everyone who visits the United States needs a visa. The U.S. has an agreement with 39 countries and does not require a visa of their citizens when they visit the United States. However, even travelers who do not require a visa may need something called an Electronic System for Travel Authorization. The requirements can be confusing, but you can find out about the visa waiver program, passport requirements, and more from the Department of Homeland Security.

  1. Don’t Discuss Politics

Politically, the United States is divided between two main factions, and unfortunately, the divisions keep getting deeper and deeper. For the most part, people in the United States are friendly and welcoming to visitors from other countries and willing to help you out. However, political discussions can spark arguments that may become heated, so it is better not to bring up the subject at all as you are trying to make new friends in the U.S.

  1. Be Aware of Age Restrictions

In the United States, people are legally considered to be adults at the age of 18. At this time, they are able to take advantage of most rights and privileges. However, there are a few exceptions. The legal drinking age in the United States is 21, and it is illegal for people younger than that to consume alcohol. Car rental companies usually do not rent to anyone under the age of 25, and those that do may charge extra.

  1. Neither Sales Tax Nor Gratuities Are Included in Prices

Not every state imposes a sales tax, and some only impose sales taxes on specific items. However, if there are sales taxes, they are not included in the price listed, meaning that you can expect to pay a little bit more at the cash register.

Gratuities are usually expected, especially in big cities, because people in service jobs get paid ridiculously menial wages in the hopes that patrons will pay enough in tips to make up the difference. However, the gratuities aren’t included in the bill, so this is another extra expense.

  1. Food Portions Are Huge

While large American food portions can be startling to people from other countries, they can also be good for you if you have a limited food budget. There is no requirement for you to eat the entire meal at the restaurant. You can eat half your entree there and take the rest back to your accommodations to make a meal the next day. Just ask the server at the restaurant for a take-home box

  1. The United States Is More Than Just Cities

The U.S. has some very impressive cities that are well worth a visit, such as New York and San Francisco. However, some of the most spectacular sights are outside the big cities. Almost every state has national and state parks featuring lush greenery, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, and wildlife. Some have interesting and seemingly improbable rock formations. If nightlife and beaches are your things, then Miami is a place to go. Also, make sure to go for rentals such as these apartments for rent in Miami over hotels as they are much cheaper plus you get all the amenities that are necessary for your stay.

Some of America’s national parks are world famous, such as Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, and the Grand Canyon. However, even those that are less famous still have a lot to offer, so don’t be afraid to step a little bit off the beaten path during your vacation to the United States.
