Black Friday 2022 e-commerce reaches record $9.12B, Thanksgiving $5.3B; BNPL and mobile are big hits

As e-commerce continues to grow, retailers were able to rack up $9.12B of sales on Black Friday 2022, an increase of 3 percent from last year.

Retailers are going all out in efforts to sell products and make money this holiday season with Thursday specials and ads which will help kick off the holiday season early. Department stores have extended their hours on both Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, advertising doorbusters on their websites as well as in store flyers. They are also offering “free shipping” for all online orders on Friday.

As the holiday shopping season will kick off on Thanksgiving Day for many retailers, it is predicted that Americans will spend a record amount of money this holiday season. This year, retail sales are expected to reach a record $1.5 trillion and more than 137 million Americans will either shop in stores or online this season.

The most popular category on Black Friday: toys. Additionally, there was an increase in B2B (business to business) purchases and website traffic as well as mobile activity is up 14 percent year-over-year, according to Adobe Digital Insights.

Retailers are expecting to see increased sales this holiday season with a total of 8.1 Million visitors to websites on Black Friday. Amazon is expected to make the most money from this, although it had a disappointing result when it came to holiday sales in 2016. Other retailers that have seen success include Walmart, Best Buy and Toys R Us which are expected to be the top three online retailers on Black Friday.
