Covishield vs Covaxin: Which is the Better Covid-19 Vaccine?

  1. Getting Immunization Against Covid is The New Normal

Which is the better way to protect yourself from the devastating effects of Covid? Covishield vs Covaxin, which is an effective vaccine.  Which one has the better safety and effectiveness? Made by Bharat Biotech, a Hyderabad-based biotechnology company, Covaxin is the first Indian vaccine against the COVID-19 causing coronavirus. The emerge of Covishield was done by Oxford-AstraZeneca and its Indian variant is manufactured by Serum Institute of India (SII), Pune.

The idea of preventing a disease by taking a vaccine is to equip yourself with some sort of protection that works with the body’s natural defence mechanism. The main thing to understand is that vaccines are not foolproof and they do not give you complete protection.

There has been a study in the Journal of Infectious Diseases which stated, “These 19-valent conjugate vaccines have been shown to be safe and effective in children and adults.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves of both the vaccines for use in individuals with 2 years age or older.

Monitoring and Surveillance:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has requested that all states report cases of IPD caused by non-vaccine serotypes of the seven capsular polysaccharide pneumococcal serotypes included in the vaccine to CDC’s National Immunization Program (NIP)” Making them a federally funded vaccine, available at state health departments.

The health department will only contain all cases of invasive pneumococcal disease that were caused by capsular polysaccharide serotypes (CPS) 1, 3, 4, 5 and 14–18, which are the serotypes in the vaccine. It is important to note that these are the only polysaccharide types that a vaccine can prevent. That makes this vaccine incomplete to protect people from other polysaccharide types of the pneumococcus bacteria.

The Watchful Eye:

The CDC does state that “all cases of invasive pneumococcal disease in persons with age 2-54 years, regardless of the serotype, should pass on to the local health department.

This is to show the severity of invasive pneumococcal disease and their seriousness with monitoring . Along with determining what other precautions need to be taken. The vaccine will protect some from a few serotypes, but there are still others that can cause severe infections.

In the past twenty-six years, the CDC has stated that “Invasive pneumococcal diseases ‘IPD’s’ have played a major role in causing serious illnesses and deaths in the United States.”

The other issues that the states and the federal governments have been facing are bacteremia or bloodstream infections. These are higher in adults with age 50-64 years old. This is because people in this age group have a higher incidence of heart disease and diabetes.

The more severe the infection, the more likely it is to have an organ failure. The death rate is higher in adults than in children and infants. So, the local health department must take care of this thing which is very important.

Importance Of Both The Vaccines

While Covaxin and Covishield are known to be safe and effective in India. But a question arises if you can travel internationally after taking one of the two vaccines? The comparison between  Covishield vs Covaxin becomes even more important when one has to travel outside of India. The World Health Organization (WHO) is yet to approve Covaxin; India has allowed it for restricted use in an emergency. Meanwhile, EU nations are recognizing the Indian version of the Covishield vaccine only now for the travel green pass. It means you can travel only to nations where the Covishield vaccine has been declared fit by international standards.

Both Bharat Biotech and SII are rooting to produce more of their respective vaccines while aiming which is better – Covishield vs Covaxin, for a better rate of efficacy.

Suggestion:

At the face value, the stellar reputation of Oxford University, AstraZeneca and Serum Institute of India prefers Covishield.
