Everything To Know About Top 5 Fast Bowlers In Cricket

The top fast bowlers in cricket who have created records with their overwhelming performances over the centuries are as follows: 

  1. Shoaib Akhtar:  Shoaib Akhtar is considered to be one of the fastest bowlers in the history of international cricket. He was the person to make a world record by bowling the fastest delivery of 161.3km/h against England at the 2003 World Cup. He is popularly known as the “Rawalpindi Express” for being the first bowler to bowl at 100 miles per hour. In the 1998 international cricket match, after the speed measuring devices came to use, Akhtar successfully created the record of record of the fastest bowl at 161 mph. Moreover, he is recognized as one of the only three bowlers to have ever broken the 100 mph barrier in cricket history. During a one-day international match against England in World cup 2003, he delivered 100.2 mph. In 2003, Akhtar has credited two ten-wicket hauls which came in a domestic tournament against Bangladesh and an away game against New Zealand. He has been honoured with the man of the match award twice in test cricket as well as ten times in limited overs cricket. 
  2. Jeff Thomson: Jeffrey Thomson, popularly referred to as Jeff Thomson is a former Australian cricketer who is considered by many cricket supporters as one of the fastest bowlers the world has ever seen. Thomson bowled with a slinging action, the style he acquired from his training to be a javelin thrower in his younger days. Thomson came victorious in the fastest bowling competition organized by the Australian television Channel 9, in a year in which he was banned from playing professional cricket. Thomson ended his Test career by taking 200 wickets. The well-known Australian cricketer, Rod Marsh once expressed that Thomson was the fastest bowler to whom he has kept wickets. Thomson used to generate fear in the minds of his opponents because of his fast bowling consistency. His fastest delivery was at a speed of 160.6 km/hr against West Indies at a match in 1975.  He efficiently took 200 Test wickets and 55 ODI wickets between the years 1972 to 1985. He was mentioned in the Australian Hall of Fame by the CA in 2016.
  3. Shaun Tait: Shaun Tait, the famous right-arm fast bowler, represented Australia in all three forms of cricket. In February 2010,  during a Twenty20 international match, Tait delivered a ball at 160.7 km/h. That was the fastest ball ever recorded in Australia. His unpredictable nature as a bowler often proved to be beneficial in dismissing batsmen. His slinging bowling action is somewhat similar to Jeff Thomson’s style of bowling.  His perfection as a fast bowler played a key role in Australia’s successful World Cup campaign in 2007. He picked 4/39 off 10 overs which is considered to be his best One Day International match against the extremely talented South African team in the semi-final match at St Lucia.
  4. Andy Roberts: Andy Roberts was one of the most talented fast bowlers in the world of cricket. His record delivery was of 159.5 km/hr against Australia in 1975.  Roberts gave outstanding performances on behalf of West Indies in the World Cups of 1975 and 1979 respectively. He was successful in taking 202 Test Wickets and 87 ODI wickets in his playing career as a West Indies Cricketer. In 1972, after arriving in England,  he performed excellently for Hampshire County Cricket Club and then later for Leicestershire County Cricket Club. 1983. The former cricketer of Pakistan, Imran Khan, once stated that a ball delivered to him by Andy Roberts was certainly the fastest and most terrifying one he had ever faced in his career. Roberts was honourably inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009. 
  5. Shane Bond:  Shane Bond is a former New Zealand cricketer who is one of the best fast bowlers.  He performed excellently  in Test matches,  ODI, as well as many  International cricket matches.  Bond could regularly bowl at speeds of more than 145 km/h. He was first recorded to deliver more than 150 km/h in the 2001/02 season. He was a brilliant fast bowler whose fastest delivery of 156.4 km/h against India in the World Cup of 2003 created record. Bond was considered to be the fastest New Zealand Cricketer to take 100 wickets in ODIs. In contrast to a few other fast bowlers, Bond used to combine his pace with control and accuracy,  which made him successful in all forms of the sport.  Shane Bond made the distinct record of bowling the first-ever maiden over in the ICC T20 World Cup history in the year 2007. After his retirement as a player, Shane Bond coached the New Zealand team for three years and he has been mentoring the Mumbai Indian team since 2015.
