Jonathan Byers is a junior at Hawkins High School and Mike Wheeler’s younger brother. He is one of the four boys who was abducted by The Upside Down in 1983, along with his three friends. He was saved alongside Will, but unlike his other friends, he remained under the effect of Eleven’s powers. After the incident, Jonathan starts to have nightmares about The Upside Down and “demo-dogs”.

Charlie Ross Heaton is an English actor and singer who was born on February 6, 1994. He is best known for playing Jonathan Byers in the science fiction horror series Stranger Things on Netflix, which premiered in 2016 and is currently ongoing, as well as for his work in the movies As You Are (2016), Marrowbone (2017), The New Mutants (2020), No Future (2021), and The Souvenir Part II (2021). Heaton participated in a variety of London-based bands before beginning his acting career.

Biography
Jonathan Byers is the younger brother of Mike Wheeler. After Will’s disappearance, Jonathan is one of the four boys who are abducted in order to be used as a test subject for Hawkins Lab to find a cure for the Upside Down. Unlike the rest of his friends, he does not fully return to normal following Will’s rescue, remaining under Eleven’s residual telekinetic abilities.

Personality and traits
Jonathan has been described as a “genuinely kind” person. He is loyal and caring, and he looks out for his friends. He is also known to be athletic when he gets involved in basketball.

Jonathan also suffers from recurrent nightmares about The Upside Down and Demo-dogs, which he reveals to Will at the school’s boiler room during the climax of the first season.

During season two it is shown that Jonathan’s life is filled with nightmares, when he dreams of the suicide of his friend Billy Hargrove and he spots a demo-dog in the woods. In another nightmare, Jonathan sees the lifeless body of his brother Mike, who had committed suicide.

In the same episode, it is revealed that at some point before Will’s disappearance Jonathan saw a woman in white walking down an empty street with a dog and believed that she was Eleven. This sighting is the reason for his interest in the lab.

Relationships
He is best friends with Will and Dustin, although he remains unaware of their involvement in supernatural phenomena. He also develops a relationship with Max Mayfield, who often teases him when they are together. Although he initially has an antagonistic relationship with his brother after the suicide of Mike, they come to terms with each other following Mike’s memorial service.

Trivia
Robin, who portrayed Jonathan Byers, was cast as the character at age thirteen. When he auditioned for the role, there was a height requirement of 5 ft 10 in, but Robin is 5 ft 8 in (1.73 m). He wore an extra pair of shoes during his audition and got the part because he looked taller than all other applicants.

In season one it is revealed that Jonathan’s favorite movie is E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial .
