Kolkata Knight Riders: The real fighter of IPL

Kolkata Knight Riders is a cricket team from the city of Kolkata, West Bengal. The club was formed on January 19, 2008, and is owned by Shah Rukh Khan. It plays its home games at Eden Gardens stadium in south Kolkata. Its current captain is Shreyas Iyer.

Bid war in IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders

In 2008, the Indian Premier League announced that a new franchise from South India would be added to the league. Two of the cities in contention for the new team were Hyderabad and Bangalore. The final choice came down between Bangalore and Kolkata. Kolkata Knight Riders eventually won the bid with a US$75.09 million bid.

The team owners of Kolkata Knight Riders are Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Jay Mehta. Shah Rukh Khan owns a 90% stake in KKR. This comes to $75 million while Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta jointly own another 10% stake in this franchise that comes to $7.5 million each.

First Season in IPL of Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders began its first season poorly, winning just one match in their first seven matches in an early-season game against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. However, KKR turned its fortune around, winning their next match against the Delhi Daredevils in Delhi, and followed that up with two more wins against Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. This was followed by two losses before winning three of their last five matches to finish in 6th place.

In Champions League Twenty20 began Kolkata Knight Riders in a similar fashion with another defeat to Australia’s Melbourne Renegades in a Twenty20 encounter. On 31 March 2009, they played their first ODI match against Australia at the MCG. Knight Riders bowled first but failed to defend the 160 runs set for them by Australia as they were bowled out for just 117 runs.

Second season

In the second season, Kolkata Knight Riders improved further on their sixth-place finish from the first season by finishing at 4th place with 16 points. Their bowling was the main reason for their success upfront as they were able to restrict their opposition to low scores allowing themselves to go on and win matches from seemingly losing positions.

Third season

In the third season of IPL, they finished in the third position with 16 points as well. Sunil Narine was declared player of the tournament due to his all-round performance with both bat and ball. Fourth season

In the fourth season of IPL, they finished in the third position with 15 points.

Become Champion

In the fifth season, KKR won the title for the first time by defeating 2013 champions Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling final. They were also able to secure their captain Gautam Gambhir for another two years

Again in 2014, on 21 March, KKR snapped up the New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson for Rs.12.5 Crores. After winning the final of the 2014 season by defeating Kings XI Punjab. Knight Riders were awarded the “Emerging Team” title at the seventh annual IPL/ESPN Awards on May 27, 2014. Kolkata knight Riders won four matches and lost six matches in the 2015 edition of the Indian Premier League to finish in seventh place with eight points.

On December 19, 2017, they won their first-ever match against Chennai Super Kings in Chepauk Stadium, Chennai. They defeated CSK by 8 wickets with Manish Pandey scoring 99 runs off just 55 balls.

In 2018 they finished the IPL in 3rd position. For the very next two seasons in 2019, and 2020 in 5th position of IPL. In those two years, they didn’t qualify for the playoffs. Later in 2021 Kolkata Knight Riders finished the league stages of IPL in 4th position. They reached the final by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore in Eliminator and Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 2. But Chennai Super Kings defeated them in the final with a margin of 27 runs.
