Modern Sedans That Continue To Impress

The traditional three-box sedan is a body style that has been declining in popularity in recent years. There has always had stiff competition from more practical station wagons and minivans, but the arrival of crossover and SUV vehicles has been a huge blow to the segment. Unable to keep up with the high levels of comfort and superior cargo capacity of these high-riders, models like the Ford Focus sedan have been discontinued, though many automakers still offer coupe variants of their sedans, for those who value style of function. This is especially true in the USA, where muscle cars still abound.

This is not to say that there aren’t any worthwhile sedans. On the contrary, many people looking for a car that is affordable with high fuel economy returns may be drawn to the classification. Aside from hatchbacks, these saloons carry the lowest starting MSRP, making them ideal commuters or even cheap family cars. In larger configurations, the back seat area is usually large enough to accommodate adults, unlike the hatches, whose rear seats are better suited to children.

Cheap but reliable

Just because a car is affordable, that doesn’t mean it is low quality. Many sedans are among the most reliable vehicles on the road, and automakers are starting to pack even base model offerings with a substantial amount of standard features, particularly in terms of safety and driver-assist systems. If you do care about comfort and more advanced gadgets, you can upgrade to a higher trim level or opt for a more premium brand. However, this means spending a lot of money, and you can usually get a similarly equipped SUV for the same price.

Many buyers still appreciate this option, though, as well as the fact that you can find a sedan in just about every size. Some of the most luxurious cars are actually full-size sedans, like the Rolls-Royce Phantom, but at well over six dollar figures, that is as far from affordable as can be. Looking at the top sellers in the US, there are a few sedan entries near the top, which earn their spots thanks to low price tags, unimpeachable reliability, and great safety ratings. Here is a quick look at some of the best options on the market right now:

Toyota Camry

Embodying all the values stated above, the Camry is one the best all-round vehicles on sale. Alongside its sibling, the Corolla, it is the top-selling sedan in America. For its low price, you get a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission sending the 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels. All-wheel drive is available, though, if you live in areas prone to bad weather, and you can even go the hybrid route if you want to save some money on your monthly fuel bill.

This is more than enough power for daily use, so the optional V6 isn’t really needed, and it’s a lot more expensive, anyway. But, these affordable daily drivers aren’t really about performance. What makes the Camry so desirable is its superb safety rating. Thanks to Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, it earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. Combined with appealing mileage and a comfortable riding experience, the Camry is a great value proposition. It’s even easy to overlook the lower quality materials inside the cabin of the base trims.

Genesis G80

If you’re in the market for something a little more upmarket, then Genesis is definitely worth consideration. The brand has managed to deliver quality that rivals that of the prestigious German brands, such as BMW or Mercedes-Benz, but at a much lower price, thanks to the expertise of Hyundai and Kia. The more economical offerings of the parent company partnership have earned a lot of praise. They have shown that you can have loads of tech, competent performance, and a comfortable drive without breaking the bank.

This philosophy had carried through to the Genesis lineup, and the G80 is the middle of the range. Not quite a flagship sedan, it still boasts a very sumptuous interior and an attractive exterior. It does suffer from slightly subpar cargo capacity, but that is nothing new in the luxury segment. The fact that it goes toe-to-toe with the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series at a $10k discount is an impressive feat. While it doesn’t lack in power, it can’t quite compete with its rivals when it comes to the fun factor, even with the twin-turbo V6 installed. Still, that isn’t where Genesis has focused its attention, and the G80 earns top marks in just about every other category.

Tesla Model 3

Sedans had a bit of a headstart when it came to electrification, though hatchbacks also received their fair share of attention. Whereas SUVs and pickup trucks are only now entering the EV market, sedans have mastered the technology with Tesla leading the charge. No other brand offers the same level of single-charge driving range, and the automaker even has its own expansive FastCharger network to make going electric that much easier.

The Model 3 is the cheapest example of Tesla’s EV expertise, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t just as refined. It has all the range and instantaneous power that an electric powertrain can provide, as well as loads of technology. This includes blind-spot warning, dual-zone climate control, autonomous emergency braking, and even the option of Full Self-Driving Capability. The latter should not be overestimated, though. It will be a while before full hands-off automated driving becomes a reality.

Nevertheless, the Model 3 is one of the most advanced sedans available right now, even if its minimalist interior gives off other vibes. It is quiet, comfortable, quick, and practical, it is the quintessential EV, and you can even have it in Performance guise if you want a little more fun.

Not dead yet

These are just a few of the most appealing sedans on the market, and executive sedans barely even got a mention. These top-tier luxury cars remain highly popular, even alongside the more practical crossovers. They ooze style and you can even go the coupe route if you want to take things to the next level. Sedans have survived hatchbacks, station wagons, and minivans, so there is no reason to believe they won’t continue to sell well when competing with crossovers and SUVs. search on blogclus for more amazing articles.
