Edmond Dédé was an American musician and composer.

He spent more than forty years working in Bordeaux, first as the orchestra conductor at the Théâtre l’Alcazar and the Folies bordelaises, then as an assistant conductor at the Grand Théâtre.

Early life and education
Dédé was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, as the fourth generation of a free family there. His father was a music teacher, a poultry dealer, and a marketer. Early on, Dédé learned to play the clarinet, but he soon switched to the violin, where he excelled. Later, he would perform both his original music and his favorite composer, Rodolphe Kreutzer. Among Dédé’s earliest role models were the violinists Constantin Debergue and Italian-born Ludovico Gabici, who led the St. Charles Theater Orchestra. He was taught music theory by both Eugène Prévost and Charles-Richard Lambert, the father of the black musicians Sidney and Charles Lucien Lambert.

He got married to Sylvie Leflet, a French woman. Eugene Arcade Dédé, his only child, went on to work as a music hall conductor and song composer.

After the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, Dédé left to look for work in Mexico, and Gabici’s guidance to him ended. He eventually At the end of 1852, he eventually returned to the country and started working as a cigar maker to save money for his trip to Europe. ledHe began his journey in Paris and then proceeded to Belgium, where he helped his friend Joseph Tinchant set up a division of the Tinchant family’s cigar business. He returned to Paris around 1857 and began working as an auditeur at the Paris Conservatoire. I studied under Jean Delphin Alard and Fromental Halevy.
Bordeaux
Early in the 1860s, Edmond Dédé moved to Bordeaux to accept a position as the ballet’s assistant conductor at the Grand Théâtre. After a while, he was successful in getting a job at Théâtre l’Alcazar, a popular café-concert in the city. Later in the 1870s, he moved to the Folies Bordelaises. Throughout, Dédé continued to produce art and music with the goal of having it performed at the more prestigious Grand Théâtre.
Samuel Snaer, Jr., an African-American conductor and musician who lived from 1835 to 1900, directed the Quasimodo Symphony premiere in New Orleans. The premiere took place on May 10, 1865, in the New Orleans Theater, and a sizable audience of notable free people of color from New Orleans as well as Northern whites attended. Dédé was not present at this performance.
After relocating to Bordeaux in 1864, he only made one trip back to New Orleans, and that was in 1893. On the way to the United States, his freighter capsized, necessitating a rescue. When he arrived in New Orleans, three benefit concerts were held in his honor, and he attended all of them. The concerts featured Jelly Roll Morton student William J. Nickerson as well as other prominent musicians from Leans. The welcome committee that organized the Dédé concerts included members of the Citizens Committee, a group of social and legal activists who brought the legal challenges that led to the Plessy v. Ferguson ruling in 1896.
Dédé died on January 5, 1903, in Paris. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris has preserved a large portion of his creative output.
On November 20, 2021, Google’s American home page featured Dédé as a “Google Doodle” in honor of his 194th birthday.
Personal life
After getting married to a Frenchwoman named Sylvie Leflet in 1864, Dédé made Bordeaux her home. Their only child, Eugène Dédé, went on to work as a music hall conductor and song writer.

The 194th birthday of black Creole composer Edmond Dédé is commemorated in a Google doodle
The Doodle, which features Edmond Dédé conducting an orchestra with a violin and clarinet in the background, was made by Brooklyn-based artist Lyne Lucien at Google’s request. In true Google Doodle fashion, the rows of opera seats on either side have decorations that spell out “Google.”

As a Haitian-American artist, I took pride in depicting Edmond Dédé, an incredible artist of Haitian descendent. Through his music compositions, he captured the joyful and vibrant spirit present in Haitian culture. Dédé’s revolutionary music compositions reminded me of my childhood growing up in Port-au-Prince, which was colored in passion and spirit.
