Benefits of Group Exercise for Emotional Wellness

by Sonal Shukla

Everyone needs a little exercise now and then, but each type of workout has its own set of benefits.

Sometimes it is best to take the time to spend with others who are going through the same challenges as you. Group exercise provides support while getting your heart rate up and working out your stress. It’s relaxing and uplifting at the same time!

Group exercise can help you build an arsenal of skills that you may not even be aware are in you, so long as you find a group that works for your personality.

The benefits of group exercise are many, here are just a few.

1. Group exercise promotes stress relief.

Stress is not good for you and can be harmful to your health in a variety of ways. Regardless if it is inside or outside, the effects of stress on our bodies are similar. Exercise does wonders for lifting your spirits and “re-boot” your body and mind after a stressful day at work or school. If you want to get more out of sports, try making them into a team sport with friends or family members.

2. Being a part of one another’s company helps you to feel more connected to the group.
When your mind is focused on something else, it can be hard to stay connected with other people or find meaning in each other’s words. It is the same feeling when you take a class for the first time and have no idea what to expect. The person who leads or organizes the group exercise will make sure everyone stays engaged and informed of each exercise so that it is less intimidating for those who may need extra support.

3. Group exercises can improve your body awareness and teach you how to listen to your
body.

You may think that you know how your body feels, but you only truly understand how it works after observing it over and over again. You will realize your own limitations and take joy in overcoming them as a team.

4. Group exercise can help you to get more physically active with the whole family or in a group of friends, which is especially beneficial for those with children and elderly parents who may want to exercise together.

It is so much easier to keep up with the activity level of many others if you are dedicated and motivated to do so…and this motivation may last longer than if you were to exercise on your own. The only requirement of group exercise is a willingness to push yourself a little bit further and try something new.

5. Group exercise can offer you the chance for meeting new people who you may want to form relationships with in the future.

Making friends is easy if you are an extrovert and love being around others, but for more introverted folk, it can be more difficult to meet new people with genuine intentions.
