In an effort to stop the move to legally change the name and gender of their child, who is now known by the name Zaya and identifies as a girl, Dwyane Wade took the time to publicly respond to a petition that was filed by his ex-wife.
According to documents first obtained by The Blast, Siohvaughn Funches- Dwyane Wade filed the petition this week and accused her ex-husband of “attempting to circumvent the requirements of the Illinois final custody order judgment entered on March 14, 2011.” The former Heat player “shall discuss with and obtain input in the major decisions affecting care, welfare, activities, health, education, and religious upbringing” of their children, according to the custody order, she said.
Due to his connections and marketing opportunities, including but not limited to agreements with Disney, Funches-Wade claimed her ex-husband “is positioned to profit from the minor child’s name and gender change with various companies.” Dwyane Wade “may be pressuring” their child about the potential “financial opportunities,” the woman continued, and she claimed to have spoken with him about the potential financial rewards in April 2022.
A hearing on the case is set for December in Los Angeles.
Wade replied with a long statement that was published on his Instagram.
Wade began, “I guess I have to address these allegations here since this must be the new way of parenting, which is a damn shame.
“I received a social media post about me forcing our 15-year-old child to be someone she is not and to do something against her will while I’m on a life-changing trip in our motherland, Africa. These are damaging and grave accusations that have harmed our kids.
“While none of us are surprised by Siohvaughn’s efforts to contest Zaya‘s identity or her relentless attempts to tarnish my reputation, I’m very disappointed in the ways in which she consistently prioritizes herself and her needs over those of her children. While Zaya was in class, the report was released. This young person has managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA in honors classes despite dealing with all the unwanted and harmful attention and discussions about her gender and sexuality from people who are determined not to even try to get to know her!

“Siohvaughn made a similar attempt over ten years ago (using equally damaging lies and harming her children irreparably), and after 13 lawyers, I was granted sole custody of our two children while still playing in the NBA! Since I knew it would be very challenging for our kids to adjust to their new normal, all I ever wanted was uninterrupted parenting time. She has therefore spent more time talking to lawyers since I filed for divorce than she has spent leaving her house to actually see or speak to or LISTEN to Zaya over the years, instead of actually attempting to co-parent.
“Over the years, I’ve given her the chance to get in touch with Zaya‘s teachers, doctors, and therapists, as well as meet her friends, so she could get her own understanding of our child’s needs for her LIFE from a perspective! She won’t do it! Zaya has given her every chance to try to get to know her, but she hasn’t attended a school, recital, graduation, school dance, play date, practice, parent-teacher conference, etc. She won’t do it!

“For more than ten years, I have not witnessed this woman, who professes to be a good Christian mother, make any effort or sacrifice to leave her home and be involved in her children’s lives. Zaya is announcing to the world—and especially to her mother—that she is no longer the same 3-year-old! Zaya or any of our kids would never be forced to do anything against their will in our home, much less be forced to assume a particular identity. Zaya and my family aren’t playing this game, and neither is my family. She lives like this! While she was picking up the pieces after numerous heartbreaks, my wife and our community served as her rock.

“Siohvaughn has made the decision to basically be Zaya‘s absent parent ALL BY HERSELF. The stereotype that men are absent-minded and bad fathers is untrue here because I’m ten feet below the ground and I’m still getting through the BS! This time, I won’t let myself be complacent and let her make a joke out of my devotion to my family. There is no more room for the high road. The breakup between Dwyane and Siohvaughn wasn’t exactly amicable. Dwyane Wade reportedly received sole custody of their two children, according to ESPN Milwaukee.
According to ESPN Milwaukee, Chicago Judge Renee G. Goldfard stated in her decision that Siohvaughn “embarked on an unstoppable and relentless pattern of conduct for over two years to alienate the children from their father, and lacks either the ability or the willingness to facilitate, let alone encourage, a close and continuing relationship between them.”
Dwyane Wade disclosed the existence of his child in February 2020.
“Our 12-year-old, who was home at the time, came in and said, “Hey, I want to talk to you guys. At the time, he said, “I believe moving forward, I’m prepared to live my truth and I want to be referred to as she and her. I would love for you guys to call me Zaya.
To ensure that we give our child the best chance to be her best self, “we’re just trying to learn as much information as we can.”
