Female Invest acquires sustainability-focused investment platform Gaia Investments

by Sonal Shukla

Female Invest, an early stage venture capital firm based in New York, has acquired Gaia Investments. Founded by Malea Daguilin, a female-led investment firm focused on green and sustainable ventures, Gaia Investments will continue to operate as usual with its management team remaining intact. The acquisition marks Female Invest’s fifth portfolio company with a focus outside of New York City.

This acquisition is another example of Female Invest’s commitment to help women-owned businesses and the environment grow and scale globally. In October 2017, Female Invest launched the Female Founders Fund, a $30 million fund to support women-led ventures in low-to-mid market capitalization companies across the United States and Canada.

Female Invest will make an investment in Gaia Investments’s first fund, which is investing in a diverse portfolio of businesses that are committed to driving positive social and environmental impact. Gaia will continue to operate as usual with its management team remaining intact.

“We are very excited about acquiring Gaia. We at Female Invest love what they do and we share their values,” said Malea Daguilin, founder of Female Invest. “With the support of our team and long-term planning, we will continue to grow the business.”

“We are very excited about the opportunity to work closely with Female Invest,” said Daphne Daguilin, founder of Gaia Investments. “We at Gaia look forward to continuing to build our company together, side-by-side.”

The purchase price for the deal is not being disclosed.

“Gaia Investments has a unique approach to investing in innovative investments focused on creating positive social and environmental impact”, said Malea Daguilin, Founder and CEO of Female Invest. “We look forward to continuing to grow and support their business model.”

With over a decade of experience, Daphne Daguilin spent the early part of her career trading for financial institutions, rising up through partnership positions to become the Chief Market Strategist. Due to her passion for markets, she moved into sustainable investments, founded Gaia in 2007, and became an expert on the topic through research. She opened an office in New York City in 2012 specifically for sustainability investments. In November 2014 Malea Daguilin moved from a mid-size ad-tech company to Female Invest where she assumed CEO duties and is currently focused on creating female focused investment opportunities.

Gaia Investments has over $75 million under management. In 2016, Gaia closed its first fund, with $55 million from a diverse group of investors. The firm is currently investing out of its second fund, which closed in October 2017 and is targeting $60 million. Gaia Investments has invested in more than 15 companies since 2007, including businesses focused on a wide range of industries including consumer products, energy efficiency and forestry.

Female Invest was founded by two experienced female entrepreneurs who were seeking to create new investment opportunities for women-led local and global companies. The firm is currently serving multiple ventures working in media and entertainment, e-commerce, education, enterprise software and technology hardware as well as real estate and services industry sectors.
