Twitter’s employees await their fate under Elon Musk

by Sonal Shukla

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, told employees of Twitter that he was considering selling his company and migrating to a new platform. There are fears that the company may soon be bought by another big player like Facebook or Amazon.

The news comes after a recent string of controversies for Twitter — including its decision to remove verification badges from many prominent right-wing websites such as Breitbart’s former homepage — as well as several high-profile departures from their ranks.

Despite all these, Musk is still seriously considering selling up and moving somewhere else. He tweeted that he had “never heard of a company buying back its own shares” and he was open to the idea.

Musk has been the victim of an enormous amount of abuse on Twitter over the years, but lately he seems to be taking it particularly hard. He’s repeatedly asked the company to take action against specific users and has lashed out at them on the rare occasions they have.

It’s hard to tell if the company itself is genuinely at fault for Musk’s treatment or if he’s simply an easy target for persistent trolls, but it seems like things have gotten so bad for him that he may be willing to sell up entirely.

Twitter’s head of news, Vijaya Gadde, has previously spoken out about the abuse directed at Musk and other high-profile executives. She conceded that Twitter could do more to stop it and promised to take action in the future.

Philanthropist and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel has also been subjected to unending abuse on Twitter. Many of his critics have accused him of being a conspiracy theorist because of his investment in and support for Donald Trump.
