The UIDAI has also launched an application form ‘Aadhaar’ which gives individuals the facility to update their demographic details like name and address with immediate effect.

Advantages of Aadhaar

The list of advantages of Aadhaar is too long to discuss in this paper, however here are some highlights:

  1. It is a 12-digit unique identification number, which is used as proof of your identity and address.
  2. It can help reduce wastage of food and essential services in Government schemes that require biometric data at local booths.
  3. The personal data stored in the Aadhaar database can be access by the authorised government agencies. They can use it for their own purposes like census etc. provided you do not mind sharing with them.
  4. It will empower the people by helping them file income tax returns for their income earned from every job or business or even for higher education expenses in case they want to claim scholarship or fellowship etc.
  5. UIDAI will help check corruption as every transaction can be tracked by the authorities.
  6. It will help in curbing duplicity of identities which is a significant problem in India.

However, despite these advantages, Aadhaar has to many controversies from its very inception with government agencies and private institutions expressing concerns about its security and surveillance implications over the long term. The Supreme Court also expresses doubts about its constitutional validity at a later stage when it was made mandatory for all citizens to have it to avail government services like bank accounts, PAN card etc.
