The examination is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission. It comprises three stages prelims, mains, and interview. The salary is offered based on the 7th pay commission. However, the in-hand salary differs from officer to officer. It is based on the area of their posting. The salary comprises various components such as dearness allowance, travelling allowance, housing allowance, etc. Also, the compensation in the metro city is higher than in the urban and rural areas. The minimum amount of allowances is provided to an officer who is posted in a rural area. 

The various posts that are available under the IAS category are ADM, Deputy Secretary, Undersecretary, District Magistrate, Deputy Secretary, Director, Divisional Commissioner, Principal Secretary, Additional Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary, Chief Secretary, and Secretary, and Cabinet Secretary of India. The highest pay level offered to the Cabinet Secretary of India is paying level 18. On the other hand, SDM, Undersecretary, Assistant Secretary, offered compensation at the lowest pay level 10.
