What is the most important thing in life

what is the most important thing in life for you

by Sonal Shukla

For all of the progress our species has made, we’re still not completely clear on what’s most important in life. The answer changes from person to person, and it can even change from moment to moment depending on your circumstances. Though we don’t always know exactly what’s most important, we do know that you can’t be happy without happiness. Here are some of the ways to get yourself in a good place.

No regrets

We all have regrets, but learning from them can help us to be better people. Whether it’s deciding to go back and study abroad for a semester or ending a bad relationship, we’re always better off regretting something that we did rather than something we didn’t do. There are things we don’t want to regret when looking back on our lives and there are things that would make us wish we never existed if they hadn’t occurred.

Love everyone around you

My father taught me from a young age that, the people you surround yourself with are who you become. Therefore, I consider it very important to be surrounded by positive and uplifting individuals. When working with others on collaborative projects, have clear communication and allow each individual to reach their full potential. Don’t bring someone into your group or company if they don’t agree with your values or goals.

Give with no expectation of return

The greatest gift you can give anyone—yourself included—is your own attention. The reality is that we live in a world filled with judgment, bias, and self-interest. When we can look past those things, without judgment or prejudice of our own, we open ourselves up to amazing experiences. Giving without expectation means being fully aware of what you’re getting out of any given situation—and ensuring that it aligns with what you hope to get out of it.

Be free from addictions

There are several important elements to consider when you’re living a fulfilling and authentic life, one of which is freedom from addiction. This could be related to food, work, relationships or any other part of your day-to-day life. If you want to live a happier and more fulfilling existence by being free from whatever makes you feel trapped and unable to express yourself fully, take some time today to really look at your current circumstances. How do they make you feel?

Appreciate all your hard work and great effort

It’s easy to take things for granted, but what’s important is not what you have, but who you have. When you make your bed every morning, appreciate everything that person did to get it done. Maybe they had a bad day or just wanted to get home and relax, yet still took time out of their day to make something good happen in yours.

Appreciate music and art

Studies show that engaging with art and music—whether through appreciation or creation—can have a tremendous positive impact on your mental well-being. Rather than lamenting what you don’t have, celebrate everything you do; appreciate the beauty and you’ll feel less lonely, helpless, and hopeless. You may even feel like sharing your sense of gratitude. People appreciate such positivity!

Look at everything with love, even your problems.

Love is one of those words that has been cheapened over time. More than likely you have known someone who uses it as a weapon, or perhaps you have even fallen victim to it yourself. When love is felt and expressed, however, there are few things more wonderful or powerful. This quote from Mother Teresa sums up what true love looks like: Spread love everywhere you go.

Learn to forgive. That way, people will forgive you as well

Holding on to hatred and anger only hurts you more. Learn to forgive others and allow them to do wrong without holding a grudge against them. Only then will you be able to forgive yourself as well for all your shortcomings. Forgiveness doesn’t mean that you have to trust someone who has betrayed or hurt you, but it does mean that you don’t have to let their actions affect your own happiness. Forgiveness means letting go of anger and bitterness, which allows us to find peace with ourselves and with those around us. And when we are at peace with ourselves, we can share that peace with others.

Finally, practice gratitude daily. Gratitude will bring you peace and joy

Gratitude plays a significant role in our emotional health and wellbeing. Dr. Robert Emmons, who has studied gratitude for decades, found that keeping a gratitude journal can significantly increase happiness levels and reduce depression symptoms. In fact, practicing gratitude daily can even alter your brain structure to boost optimism. One way to cultivate gratitude is by keeping a journal of three things you’re grateful for every day.
