by priyanka singh

The Indian Premier League is the top cricket league in India, currently ranked as the best domestic T20 league in the world. It was founded by Lalit Modi. The league consists of 8 teams who play each other twice on a home and away basis. This is how the team standings are determined at the end of the season. The top four teams enter into a two-legged playoff for the Indian Premier League final.

Starting Of Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League (IPL) was founded in 2008 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The creation of the IPL was part of a larger plan to introduce city-based teams with all the games in a single time zone, avoiding time zone differences. It is currently contested by 8 teams, each representing a different city, who play each other twice at home and away venues. The top four teams go through to a playoff for the Indian Premier League Final.

The Indian Premier League is affectionately known as the IPL. It was founded by Lalit Modi, who is also the commissioner of the league. The league is currently valued at US$4.7 billion. It has the highest television viewership of any sports league in the world. The IPL was conceived after discussions with several business tycoons, who were approached by Modi to invest in the project.

Logo of IPL

The logo of the Indian Premier League consists of an orange circle that contains a cricket ball and a stump, along with the word ‘IPL’ written on it in blue and gold letters.

Last year Kings XI Punjab changed their name to Punjab Kings. They also changed their logo. This year two new teams are also added in the league Gujarat Titans, and Lucknow supergiants.

Teams Home grounds

Each team plays its matches at a different ground in their home city. The Indian Premier League is being broadcasted in over 200 countries worldwide. The television rights were sold for a staggering USD 895m, which is the highest amount of money for a sports league in the world. The average viewing figures per match are 10 million viewers, which makes the IPL the most-watched sporting event in the world, with only Super Bowl and World Cup finals viewership being higher.

Controversies around IPL

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the Indian Premier League. Several questions have been raised about the cricket leagues like allegations on fixing, and match-fixing by the players.

Match-fixing allegations against Lalit Modi

Lalit Modi investigated by the Delhi police in 2010 for allegedly match-fixing a few games in the league. He fled to London, in order to avoid arrest. 13 people arrested and sent to judicial custody for match-fixing; however, in 2012 it was reported that there was no evidence of any wrongdoing by Lalit Modi and his associates. The case is still going on in court with many allegations on board members and players involved with betting on matches.

The spot-fixing scandal was a match-fixing case in 2010, which involved at least 11 people. They accused of corruption, illegal betting, and money laundering. The scandal started when Delhi police arrested a player by the name of Sreesanth along with two bookies and two other players before the start of the Indian Premier League season. The team management suspended them from the team.

The spot-fixing allegations followed soon after; this is related to three out of six matches that are under investigation for match-fixing. The question is about a number of incidents that seem to indicate that several players were involved in illegal activities.
