What is UPSC?
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is the main recruiting agency of India’s government, and is responsible for staffing public sector undertakings with qualified candidates. Its main function is to conduct competitive examinations for posts in central and state governments, as well as services under the Union Territories of Puducherry and Chandigarh.
UPSC has also been tasked with recruiting officers for national security agencies such as the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), which were established after Independence.

Candidates who wish to apply for vacancies in UPSC are required to have passed Class XII from any recognized university. With foreign educational qualifications equivalent to those gained in a UGC-recognized Indian University can also apply for jobs in UPSC. Candidates who have a degree but not recognized by the UGC are eligible to apply provided they have passed Class XII examinations. Age is also a criterion for jobs in UPSC. Candidates must be between 21 and 30 years of age to apply.
A candidate’s educational qualifications must be at least Class XII, but candidates with a higher education qualification are eligible to apply provided they have passed the relevant CSE, ESE, or IPS exam, or can demonstrate equivalent skills.
Numerical ability is another prerequisite for applying for UPSC jobs. The minimum requirement is aptitude in mathematics. Candidates aspiring to join posts in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) are required to have scored at least 45 percent in the entrance exam conducted by IB itself, which tests candidates’ ability to quickly resolve numerical problems.

UPSC recruitment procedures
Applicants who wish to apply for the posts in UPSC must submit their applications online, which is a computer-based application. For this, applicants must have access to a computer, internet connectivity. A valid email address provided by the Government of India. Candidates are required to upload their photo along with relevant documents in the form prescribed by UPSC, such as Class-XII marksheet and passport size photographs. The online application can be accessed from the UPSC website.
After applicants have filled in the form, they must take a printout of the same and send it to UPSC headquarters within 15 days of applying. After this, UPSC will send each applicant a call letter for appearing at the examination center and reporting with all relevant documents within 15 days of receiving the call letter.

Candidates with zero marks are ineligible for appearing in UPSC exams as candidates must have passed Class XII with minimum 30% marks to get eligibility for Group ‘A’ Civil Services.
